Spiral PTFE back-up rings are one of the types of back-up rings that are generally used along with O-rings in pneumatic and hydraulic equipment. While O-rings are excellent sealants which have the capability to efficiently handle transactions without any loss, they tend to extrude when exposed to high pressure and high temperature conditions. |
Such conditions are common in modern industry where fluids often exert increased pressure and temperature which can be tackled by using back-up rings along with O-ring which will prevent it from extrusion. They secure the rings to make sure they don't end up extruding into the clearance area of the mating surface. There are different types including solid which is uncut, single turn scarf cut and multi-turn which is the spiral cut variant of the back-up ring.
The multi-turn or Spiral PTFE Back-up rings have protruding design to ideally suit the surface and secure the o-rings from intrusion.
